This was the second Karkus strip published in TSV, and it was based from a storyline by Jeff Stone. The story's original title is the name of this post. I had a bit of an obsession with Mars and its alleged 'face' at the time.
Early on in the Karkus strip's life, I considered involving other creators - maybe even artists, though this didn't ultimately come to pass. Why bring others in? 'Farming scripts out' was the practice with the more 'serious' TSV comic strips - but that was a way of finding artists for already-written stories. Nevertheless, the fanzine had put me in touch with other fans, and Jeff was first off the rank. In retrospect, I think I may have been a bit worried I wouldn't have the ideas to sustain a series, or might not find the right 'tone.' Ooh - rare shot of the Karkus flying. I still don't know if he can. I'm not sure I ever want to! And his gun is 'rested' early on in this story. I think I was wary of it being the handy device our hero whips out at every opportunity to shut any situation down, because the TV series would never do that to its hero, would it?
I like this one - Jeff struck the right notes with his story (it was a brief rather than a script, I think), and set up some mainstays: I fell in love with the Martians immediately (the standard Warrior, Txylx's lines are mine, which is why they don't really reference the plot!) and resolved to use them again as soon as possible. Panel eight of Page two is where I worked out how to make Ice Lord Susan talk.
Wow, Txylx is HUGE!
Vzbxx was Jeff's name, inspired by a line from Bottom, I think. And obviously, having the Brain of Morbius at large begged the question: but where is his Body? We'd get to that in a few stories.
